If you've asked anyone in Sri Lanka's skincare community "where do I even start," Niacinamide is probably the first word you heard. It's become the default recommendation for a reason but "good for everyone" doesn't mean "does everything," so here's what it actually does and how to use it well.
What Niacinamide Actually Is
Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3. Unlike stronger actives such as retinol or exfoliating acids, it's generally well tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin, which is a big part of why it's so widely recommended as a starting point.
What It Actually Does
Regulates oil production This is its most well-documented benefit, and it's the main reason it's such a fit for Sri Lanka's humid climate — it helps balance sebum without stripping your skin the way harsher oil-control products can.
Minimizes the look of pores By supporting your skin barrier and regulating oil, pores appear smaller and less congested over consistent use.
Improves uneven texture and tone Niacinamide is commonly used alongside (not instead of) Vitamin C for brightening, and it can help soften the appearance of dark spots over time.
Supports the skin barrier It plays well with almost every other active, which is why it's often the "base" ingredient people build a routine around before adding anything stronger.
Who Should Use It
- Oily or combination skin dealing with enlarged pores or midday shine
- Acne-prone skin looking for oil control without harsh drying
- Sensitive skin that reacts to stronger actives like retinol or acids
- Anyone wanting a low-risk, high-value starting point for a first "real" skincare routine
Who Should Be Cautious
Niacinamide is one of the gentlest actives available, but very high concentrations (10%+) can occasionally cause flushing or mild irritation on very reactive skin. If that happens, dropping to a lower concentration (around 5%) usually resolves it.
How to Use It Correctly
- Apply after cleansing, before heavier moisturizers
- Works well morning and night
- Safe to combine with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and most exfoliating acids
- Give it 4-6 weeks of consistent use before judging results — this isn't an overnight fix, it's a long-term barrier and oil-balance ingredient
Where to Start
Our Niacinamide collection includes concentrations from 5% up to 10%, including The Ordinary's well known Niacinamide 10% + Zinc formula. If you're new to actives, start at the lower end.
Pair it with a lightweight moisturizer from our Moisturiser range and daily SPF from our Neutrogena sunscreen range Niacinamide works best as part of a consistent routine, not as a standalone fix.
